This book, comprising two volumes, presents current research and original investigations in the theory of large cracks capable of propagating and initiating partial or complete fracture in deformable solids. The book covers a wide variety of problems relating to the behavior of bodies with cracks, and ranges from crack extension criteria to the solution of complex problems of fracture mechanics. Also, the authors consider critical and subcritical states of equilibrium under single, multiple, thermal and dynamic loadings in elastic, viscoelastic, elastic-plastic and piezoelectrical bodies with cracks. Experimental methods for the determination of crack-resistance characteristics of materials are exposed. The first volume, which we present to the reader, is dedicated to the main criteria and methods of elastic and elastic-plastic fracture mechanics. Using real examples, the authors show the result of applying different fracture criteria for determining the critical and permissible length of a fracture under static or cyclic loadings. The second volume, published as a separate book, contains a systematic study of special problems of fracture mechanics. The book is intended for scientists and practicing engineers working in the field of fracture mechanics and also for post-graduates and senior students specializing in solid mechanics and strength of machine parts.

The book considers computation technologies and methods for numerical simulation intended for solving the problems of improving the operational safety and the efficiency of industrial gas pipeline networks. This approach is based on modern methods of computational mechanics and mathematical optimization. The application of these methods and technologies is aimed at an integrated assessment of the state of the gas pipeline networks of industrial enterprises and the creation of efficient safe modes for their operation. These methods can be applied both at the stage of a pipeline network's design and at the stage of its operation. They allow for the development of efficient automated hardware and software systems for the early detection and prevention of dangerous malfunctioning of a pipeline network. They can be of use for development and efficiency analysis concerning anti-terrorist activities at big industrial energy plants. Practical applications of computation technologies and methods of numerical simulation are illustrated with examples of solving industrial problems for gas industry enterprises. The authors demonstrate the efficiency of these technologies and the methods for improving the safety of the oil pipeline networks serving thermal power stations. The book is intended for scientists and engineers who deal with the design of pipeline networks, the analysis of their actual state, pipeline network insurance and control, improving their industrial safety and environmental friendliness, in the context of a wide range of environment-oriented measures. The material is also comprehensible to graduate students in technical high schools.

This book is devoted to the processes of elastic and inelastic hadron-nucleus interactions at moderate (~ 1 GeV) and high energies. After short discussion of the main properties of atomic nuclei we present the standard Glauber theory for elastic and quasielastic hadron-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus scattering. Then the inelastic shadow corrections which appear at high energies are reviewed with several methods for their calculation. We consider the different absorptive parts of the elastic scattering amplitude by using the unitarity condition to study the inelastic hadron-nucleus collisions. Several phenomenological models, including Intranuclear Cascade Model, Additive Quark Model, and Quark-Gluon String Model are discussed in connection with the description of a large range of experimental data on multiparticle production from nuclear targets. The space-time picture of high energy interaction is given in detail. Finally, the main features of high density parton matter, which is probably produced in high energy heavy ion collisions, are considered. Topics as thermalization, collective flow, parton saturation, colour glass condensate, energy loss, jet quenching, quarkonium suppression, and percolation of colour sources are introduced.
