One of a series introducing major movements in modern art to general readers, students and gallery visitors, this text looks at the Post-Impressionists. Hard on the heels of the Impressionists came artists with a different agenda. Dissatisfied with the essentially short-term effects Impressionism had mastered, they strove in their different ways for an art of a more permanent, structured and expressive kind. By refining and codifying, or dismantling and reassembling, the procedures of Impressionism, artists such as Seurat, Cezanne, Gauguin and Van Gogh and their associates rewrote the rules for representational painting at the turn of the 20th century. The arbitrary colour, exaggerated forms and abstraction of their works marked a new distance between artist and nature, and prepared the public for the freedoms of the next generation of innovators. This book focuses on the artists responsible for these influential stylistic changes, and sets them in their intellectual and historical contexts.

The Hunting of the Snark relates in glittering verse the story of how the Bellman and his eccentric crew, who include a butcher, a baker, a beaver and a tailor, set off in quest of that most mysterious and elusive of creatures, the Snark. In 1959 Tove Jansson, the creator of Moomin Valley and its magical inhabitants, was commissioned to illustrate a Swedish edition of Lewis Carroll's miniature masterpiece. It proved an inspired choice, as the enigmatic charms of Jansson's illustrative style bring to life the beauty and strangeness of Carroll's tale. The minds of two of the greatest children's authors of the past 150 years meet on the page. Remarkably, amid the success of Tove Jannson's Moomin books, her unique edition of The Hunting of the Snark was forgotten, and has been unavailable for over fifty years. Now, for the first time, these beautiful illustrations are matched with Lewis Carroll's original English text, so that readers can encounter this wonderful adventure afresh through the eyes of one of Europe's finest illustrators.

Russian Revolutionary Posters Russian Revolutionary Posters
Автор: Жанр: Tate Publishing Издательство: Tate Publishing Год: 2012 Страниц: 144 Дата загрузки: 22 сентября 2017
Russian Revolutionary Posters tells the story of the development of the Soviet poster, from the revolutionary period through to the death of Stalin, revealing the way in which tumultuous events within the Soviet Union were matched by equally dramatic shifts in graphic art and design. Written and designed by David King, one of the world's foremost experts on Soviet art and himself an internationally acclaimed graphic designer, the publication features posters drawn from his unparalleled collection, well known to visitors to Tate Modern in London. The book is arranged chronologically. Captions accompany each poster, explaining the historical and artistic context in which it was produced. Constructivist posters, socialist advertising, film posters of the 1920s, classic photo-montage, the heroic posters of the Great Patriotic War, biting political satire and the cult of personality of the Stalin years are all here. The great names of Soviet poster design, including Alexander Rodchenko, El Lissitsky, Gustav Klutsis, Dimitri Moor, Viktor Demi and Nina Vatolina, all feature. However, some of the most arresting posters reproduced were created anonymously or by scarcely known artists whose work will be a revelation to many. King takes us behind the scenes, explaining the process involved in the commissioning of the posters and the key figures who coordinated poster campaigns, providing personal histories of the art directors and creative directors whose vision played such a vital role in soviet poster design. With an insightful introduction and over 165 beautifully reproduced images, some of which have never been seen before, this beautifully produced but affordable book will be the definitive one on the subject for many years to come.

Van Dyck and Britain Van Dyck and Britain
Автор: Жанр: Tate Publishing Издательство: Tate Publishing Год: 2009 Страниц: 256 Дата загрузки: 26 мая 2012
Together with Holbein, Anthony van Dyck (1599 — 1641) is one of the most important names in British pre-18th century art. Born in Antwerp he was a precocious talent, rising swiftly to become the chief assistant to Peter Paul Rubens, then Northern Europe's most prominent painter. His importance to British art cannot be overstated; during the turbulent years of the reign of Charles I, he single-handedly reinvented portrait painting, leaving behind a legacy that would influence later generations.Van Dyck first came to Britain in 1620 to work for James I. Between 1621 and 1627 he worked in Italy, adding to his clientele of wealthy patrons. Charles I recognised in van Dyck the potential to be the perfect creator of the royal image. The artist returned to London in April 1632 and was almost immediately knighted and provided with an enviable property and pension, becoming the chief painter of the court. His portraits of the royal family and courtiers, imbued with an understated authority and relaxed elegance, were an instant success. His pictures of Charles especially seemed to represent the king as both a powerful sovereign and 'nature's gentleman'. His popularity stemmed from his ease when moving in aristocratic circles, and his talent for flattering almost all subjects. Thomas Gainsborough famously said on his deathbed 'We are all going to heaven and van Dyck is of the company'. The authors will not only explore van Dyck's years in England, but also his enduring influence on British art and culture in the centuries following his death, reflected in the way 18th and 19th century British sitters wanted their portraits to convey the gravitas and sophistication the earlier painter had mastered so well. Extensively illustrated, this is the most thorough examination ever published of van Dyck's English sojourn and the influence it had on the cultural life of the nation.

The Duchamp Book The Duchamp Book
Автор: Жанр: Tate Publishing Издательство: Tate Publishing Год: 2010 Страниц: 224 Дата загрузки: 11 октрября 2013
Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968) was, without doubt, one of the most influential and controversial artists of the twentieth century. No other artist has attracted such a wealth of contradictory interpretation and commentary. Associated with Cubism, Dada and Surrealism, he avoided being too closely allied with any one art movement. Credited with the invention of the 'readymade' and a champion of what he termed non-retinal art, he was nevertheless responsible for some of the most iconic works of his era, including Nude Descending a Staircase (1912), The Large Glass (1915-23), Fountain (1917) and Etant donnees (1946-66). In The Duchamp Book, Parkinson tackles both Duchamp's work and its interpretations, in view of the fact that as his work principally focuses on ideas rather than objects, the two are inseparable. The book begins with an accessible introduction to Duchamp's career, putting the reader on a secure footing for the arguments that follow. In the following chapters, Duchamp's work is explored through key themes: the question of authorship and identity; the artist's preoccupation with eroticism; the twin poles of alchemy and science that have played such a part in interpretations of Duchamp; the uses of language of secrecy in his work; and the fundamental role of humour and play in his practice that has often confounded high-minded critics. Through its close examination of Duchamp's actual works and the demystifying of much of the frequently obscure discourse that surrounds them, The Duchamp Book makes a valuable contribution to our understanding of one of the most enigmatic but essential artists of recent times.

Susan Hiller Susan Hiller
Автор: Жанр: Tate Publishing Издательство: Tate Publishing Год: 2012 Страниц: 192 Дата загрузки: 16 мая 2015
Susan Hiller was born in the United States in 1940. Rather than attending art school she studied anthropology, moving to London in the early 1960s where she became an artist. Employing a wide variety of media, Hiller has done much in recent decades to redefine what a work of art can be. Much of her work is centred on the subconscious mind and ideas of the paranormal present in cultures around the world. Specific works have investigated auras, extra sensory perception, close encounters, dreams and automatic writing. Many are large-scale installations, variously employing film, audio, video and projection. She makes use of found material, ranging from overlooked aspects of popular culture like wallpaper and postcards, to audio interviews with members of the public. Comprehensive and extensively illustrated, this book will cover Hiller's entire career. It will include an introductory essay by Tate curator Ann Gallagher; a conversation between the critics Guy Brett, Yves-Alan Bois and the artist; and, fresh perspectives on her work from Jorg Heiser, Alexandra Kokoli and Jan Verwoert. Also reprinting key, previously published responses to Hiller by critics, this will be the most thorough and up to date survey of this extraordinary artist yet published.

Her originality, innovation and powerful desire to communicate have propelled her through a career that has spanned six decades. During this time, Kusama has explored painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, collage, film and video, performance and installation, as well as product design. Now in her eightieth year, she continues to make art, extending the range of her large-scale, dazzling installations and relentlessly hand-painting extensive series of minutely detailed figurative fantasy paintings. Kusama has exhibited widely around the world, including representing Japan at the Venice Biennale, and her work is in many major collections. Accompanying the first major retrospective exhibition of the artist's work to be staged in the UK, this lavishly illustrated book features an introductory essay by Tate curator Frances Morris as well as four other substantial essays by leading international critics. Topics covered include Kusama's time in New York, her career after her return to Japan, her installation works and an exploration of her art from a psychoanalytical point of view.
