Continuing the success of the runaway best sellers This is New York and This is London comes the latest title from M. Sasek's beloved and nostalgic children's travel series. Sasek's This is Washington, D.C. is a facsimile edition of his original book, which was first published in 1969. The brilliant illustrations have been meticulously preserved, with the facts updated for the twenty-first century. The charming illustrations, coupled with Sasek's playful narrative, makes for a perfect souvenir that will delight children and parents alike. Super-tourist Sasek paints Washington red, white, and blue as he tours the nation's capital. Stops include the Washington Monument (which commands a view of all the Federal buildings and most of the museums, monuments, and memorials), the White House (whose lawn is a grassy launching pad for the President's helicopter), and the Smithsonian's National Zoological Park, the last residence of the world's most famous ursine, Smokey the Bear! With bright pictures and snappy commentary, Sasek wittily captures all the fascinating things to do and see in a city of green parks, wide avenues, and classic white porticoes. Designed by a Frenchman and renowned for its cherry blossoms, This is Washington, D.C.!

Stanford White, Architect Stanford White, Architect
Автор: Жанр: Rizzoli (RCS MediaGroup) Издательство: Rizzoli (RCS MediaGroup) Год: 2008 Страниц: 320 Дата загрузки: 19 апреля 2012
Stanford White (1853-1906), arguably the most celebrated American architect of his day, was the visionary genius of the illustrious architecture firm McKim, Mead & White. A defining figure of the Gilded Age, White lived an extravagant life, which ended prematurely in a sensational death. His celebrity as a result was such that perceptions of the man have to some degree distracted attention from an extraordinary body of work. Now, more than a century since his passing, the enduring quality of White's architectural legacy becomes ever more apparent as the circumstances of his life and death fade to the background. In acknowledgment of this legacy, Stanford White Architect comprehensively explores White's sumptuously rich oeuvre — from the residences he designed for himself and his wife, Bessie, both at Box Hill in Saint James, Long Island, and at Gramercy Park in New York; to the extraordinary and opulent houses he designed for others, such as Rosecliff in Newport, Rhode Island, and the Payne Whitney House in New York; to those works beyond the residential, including such masterpieces as Newport Casino Theatre in Rhode Island, the Century Association in New York, and the no longer standing Moorish fantasy cum pleasure pavilion Madison Square Garden. Stanford White Architect will serve for generations to come as a vivid testament to a resplendent life in architecture.

Celebration. A time when friends and family come together in a breathtakingly beautiful setting to rejoice in one of life's milestones: a wedding, a birthday, an anniversary. Collected in this book are dozens of the most recent, most extraordinary celebrations created by the unparalleled event planner Preston Bailey. These are events on a larger-than-life scale, shaped by Bailey's use of a myriad of elements, including architecture, set design, furniture making, lighting and art installations, and even tableware and textile design. In the first half of this stunning idea book, Preston lays out for the reader the key elements to successful celebrations. First, each event must have at least one dramatic statement, that spectacular element that makes guests stand transfixed with awe, whether it is a cascading waterfall of flowers or a room lit in magnificent jewel tones of color. He discusses the magical nature of tents — a space that exists for just one evening, a blank canvas that provides endless design possibilities — such as creating a canopy ceiling dripping with ribbons and crystals. There is also the ceremony space, influenced by tradition, culture, and a bride's personal style. Next are the table settings, the intimate places within the larger event where centerpieces, china, crystal, linens, and even the chairs, all work together to create a place of comfort and beauty but also a place that constantly intrigues and entices. Finally, he presents the all-important details that elevate a party from merely wonderful to absolutely divine. In the final section of the book, Transformations, Bailey presents the best of his most recent work, seven unforgettable parties presented in their entirety. A dream book, a wish book, a book of celebration.

Mark Hampton, an American Decorator Mark Hampton, an American Decorator
Автор: Жанр: Rizzoli (RCS MediaGroup) Издательство: Rizzoli (RCS MediaGroup) Год: 2010 Страниц: 256 Дата загрузки: 27 апреля 2014
The New York Times called the late decorator Mark Hampton (1940-98) «an icon of American Style» and he was indeed one of the most famous and admired interior designers of the twentieth century, highly regarded for both his versatile design work and his own eloquence and flair. A classic American success story, Hampton grew up in small-town Indiana and went on to worldwide fame. He began his career working for the some of the greatest interior designers of the age — David Hicks, Parish-Hadley, McMillen, Inc. — and later went on to found Mark Hampton, Inc. Known for the tremendous depth and breadth of his knowledge, Hampton refused to be pi into a trademark style, moving effortlessly from sleek modernism to English country and back again. A highly popular lecturer who drew crowds, Hampton was the author of two books on design, as well as a designer of both furniture and fabrics. The book begins with a personal essay on Hampton's life and legacy, which is followed by a comprehensive portfolio of his most important decorating commissions for such clients as Estee Lauder, the Henry Grunwalds, the John Heinzes, the John Kerrys, the Carter Burdens, the Saul Steinbergs, the Prentis Cobb Hales, among others, in milieus as diverse as a Southern plantation, an Irish castle, and a Manhattan penthouse. Also documented is Hampton's work on the White House, Blair House, New York City's mayoral residence Gracie Mansion, and the American Academy in Rome. Rich with original materials, including Hampton's watercolors and gouaches, impeccably researched and intimately written by his widow, Duane Hampton, this is a visual feast for all interiors fans as well as an important addition to the history of interior design.

Great Houses of the South Great Houses of the South
Автор: Жанр: Rizzoli (RCS MediaGroup) Издательство: Rizzoli (RCS MediaGroup) Год: 2010 Страниц: 272 Дата загрузки: 28 июня 2012
The «great house» of the South inhabits a place of the imagination as much as it does any particular geographic terrain. Margaret Mitchell's Tara from Gone with the Wind, though fictional, stands even now for many Americans as the epitome of the type, with its stately white-columned porticos, shady verandahs, and elegant interiors with graceful proportions. Yet the Southern great house is much more than this. From the bookish if slightly irregular Neoclassicism of Mount Vernon to the aristocratic European splendor of Biltmore, Great Houses of the South documents through vibrant new photography the many manifestations that this mythic, highly individualized architecture has taken while richly nuanced text narrates a great American story of tradition, aspiration and reinvention.

David Hicks: A Life of Design David Hicks: A Life of Design
Автор: Жанр: Rizzoli (RCS MediaGroup) Издательство: Rizzoli (RCS MediaGroup) Год: 2009 Страниц: 302 Дата загрузки: 15 августа 2011
One of the most important and influential interior designers and tastemakers of the late twentieth century, David Hicks turned English decorating on its head in the 50's and 60's with his bold use of color, eclecticism, and geometric designs in carpets and textiles. His trademark use of electrifying color combinations, combined with mixing antiques and modern furniture and abstract paintings, became the in style for the chic of the day, and earned him a prominent place in the history of interior design. This definitive volume, part personal history, part stunningly, illustrated compendium of his work, traces the entire arc of his life and career, from his childhood in Essex to his early commissions, marriage to lady Pamela Mountbatten, and the increasingly glamorous circles in which he socialized. Making a purposeful splash with his own London home in 1954, Hicks went on to design fantastically stylish rooms for Mrs. Douglas Fairbanks Jr.; Vidal Sassoon, Helena Rubinstein, and the young Prince Charles and Princess Anne, as well as a yacht for King Fahd of Saudi Arabia, and a nightclub on the QE2. The book also traces in detail his commercial interiors and product designs, and his branding efforts in the 70's with his company that made wallpaper; fabrics, and linens, among other things, with outposts in eight countries. Also included are all of Hicks's homes, including his grand estate at Britwell; successive London bases; the Irish castle, Classiebawn; the Caribbean retreat, Savannah; and his final country house, The Grove, with its magnificent gardens of his design. Always, Hicks's work made a bold statement. There was no prettiness; no chintz — it was pure theater and the world took notice, «My greatest contribution as an interior designer has been to show people how to use bold color mixtures, how to use patterned carpets, how to light rooms and how to mix old with new» he stated in his 1968 work, David Hicks on living — with taste. Written by his son Ashley Hicks, who has unprecedented access to Hicks's archives, personal photos, journals, and scrapbooks, this is a vibrantly illustrated celebration of half a century of stunning interiors work and the equally stylish — man behind it.

Fresh perspectives on how good design can create stylish yet ecologically sound living spaces in small-scale homes. Anyone who has faced the challenges of limited living space will find inspiration in this survey of the latest trends in environmentally sensitive, small-scale residential designs. More than fifty residential spaces are profiled — from woodsy houses and repurposed barns to cool apartments and urban lofts — both inside and out. Most of the projects were designed by up-and-coming architects, and each design proves that small-scale efficiency as well as beautiful, thoughtful design can overcome the apparent constraints of a small setting. Environmental impact is a growing concern, so each project was chosen because of its ecological sensitivity. Each case history describes the challenges confronting the designer and the solutions. Creating color schemes to enhance the feeling of openness, taking advantage of high ceilings to make multiple levels, and using collapsible furniture and sliding doors to maximize space are some of the design solutions that can be applied in any situation. Filled with beautiful color photographs and helpful floorplans, this book is a remarkable showcase of how good design can transform any small space into a comfortable, modern — and environmentally sensitive — home.

This elaborate volume, authored by the designer's son, is a splendid celebration of one of the world's most inventive design minds. Combining whimsy and elegance, Piero Fornasetti (1913-1988) transformed everyday objects like cups, scarves, and screens into works of art featuring his idiosyncratic leitmotifs, such as the hand, the female face, and luminescent fish. Additionally, he created a wide range of works, including idealized architectural fantasy drawings, book designs, and provocative nudes, as well as the decor for the luxury liner Andrea Doria. Perhaps most famous for dazzling pieces of trompe l'oeil furniture, Fornasetti was rediscovered in the 1980s and has remained much sought-after by collectors worldwide. Featuring 2,800 illustrations, many never before published, the monograph is designed to be an artist's book that reflects as faithfully as possible Fornasetti's own approach to design. Fornasetti's work is organized by type and includes paintings, sculptures and etchings, furniture, graphics, textiles, glass, screens, trays, and ceramics, as well as smaller categories. With unique and exhaustive access to the archives, this epic undertaking covers detailed technical, biographical, and bibliographical information, including a list of exhibitions and a register of the complete works. A must-have for collectors and connoisseurs alike.

Palladio and His Legacy Palladio and His Legacy
Автор: Жанр: Rizzoli (RCS MediaGroup) Издательство: Rizzoli (RCS MediaGroup) Год: 2010 Страниц: 208 Дата загрузки: 17 августа 2012
This catalogue of the Palladio and His Legacy exhibition, centred on original drawings and books by the most significant and influential architect in the western world, Andrea Palladio (1508-80), examines his personal development and architecture, his influence on others achieved through his I Quattro Libri dell'Architettura, the subsequent dissemination of his teachings through translations and pattern books in Britain and America, and the influence of Palladianism on architecture in the New World. The promulgation of Palladian principles resulted in new and original interpretations that took firm hold in America, influencing both grand formal buildings and smaller utilitarian structures. The drawings are supported by numerous architectural models. Three large examples — the Pantheon, Villa Rotunda, and Jefferson's unrealized design for the White House — programmatically illustrate the journey from Rome to America. Smaller models along with rare architectural texts and pattern books, through which Palladio's ideas were primarily transmitted, reinforce the themes of the book.
