   In certain uncanny ways this wonderful, compelling novel prefigures Suite Francaise and rehearses some of the themes of her big unfinished sequence of novels. Nemirovsky must have down put her pen in 1940 and picked it straight up again to embark on Suite Francaise...This novel, though is finished, and exquisitely so — first published in France in 1947. It tells the story of two intertwined but warring French families through two world wars from 1911 to 1940, and its themes are war, love and money. This is Balzac or The Forsyte Saga on a smaller, more intimate scale, with the bourgeoisie observed close-up, with Nemirovsky's characteristically clear-eyed compassion and sly humour. Full of moving, vivid observation of the devastating effects of the two wars on a small Normandy town and an industrial family, whose patriarch is a monstrous David Golder character (as French as they come and not in the least Jewish). The exodus and flow of refugee humanity through the town in both wars pre-figures Suite Francaise, but differently again, because this is Normandy and near the Somme, and the town itself is twice razed. Evocative and unputdownable the novel brings home with heartbreaking detail and clarity how close were those two wars, how history repeated itself, unbelievably. It opens in the Edwardian era (on a fashionable Normandy beach) and ends with a changed world, under Nazi occupation. Nemirovsky has an astonishing ability to give you the most blinkered, small-minded of characters (in this case Mme Hardelot, mother of one of the central characters) and bring tears to your eyes — when Mme H realises that her son is leaving for the front in minutes rather than days... It's a gripping story of family life and starcrossed love, of money and feuds, against the backdrop of two terrible wars.

   Nice, 1920 un jeune médecin affamé, Dario, accepte de pratiquer un avortement clandestin sur une flamboyante aventurière new-yorkaise afin de sauver de la déchéance Clara, sa femme, et leur nourrisson. Une solution qui permet à ce fils de marchand vagabond et métèque de sang grec et italien de survivre, malgré l'indifférence de la clientèle chic de la ville. Multipliant les expédients durant quelques années passées à Nice, Dario a brusquement l'idée de génie qui l'aidera à force son destin: dévoyant avec une intuition machiavélique la toute nouvelle théorie psychanalytique, il devient charlatan à la mode, étrange maître des âmes se grisant d'une ascension sociale dangereuse...    Rarement l'ironie d'Irène Némirovsky aura fait autant de ravages!    »Le Bal» depicts the life of the Kampfs who, having recently gone up in the world thanks to luck with the stock decide to throw a ball in order to launch themselves into society. Their daughter Antoinette, who has just turned fourteen, dreams of attending. But Madame Kampf is resolved not to present her daughter, already so grown up, to her admirers. Instead, Antoinette is forced to sleep in the laundry room, as her bedroom is used as coatroom. In an unpremeditated fury of revolt and despair, Antoinette takes her revenge. It is swift and it is horrible. A cruel, funny and tender examination of class differences, of the dynamic between mother and daughter, «Le Bal» is ultimately dedicated to the torments of childhood. «Snow in Autumn» pays homage to Mirovsky's beloved Chekhov and chronicles the life of a devoted servant following her masters as they flee Revolutionary Moscow and emigrate to a life of hardship in Paris.

She did not live to see her ambition fulfilled, or to know that sixty-five years later, Suite Française would be published for the first time, and hailed as a masterpiece Set during a year that begins with France’s fall to the Nazis in June 1940 and ends with Germany turning its attention to Russia, Suite Française falls into two parts. The first is a brilliant depiction of a group of Parisians as they flee the Nazi invasion and make their way through the chaos of France; the second follows the inhabitants of a small rural community under occupation who find themselves thrown together in ways they never expected.    Irène Némirovsky, morte à Auschwitz en 1942, est l'auteur d'une oeuvre étonnante qui fait d'elle un des plus grands écrivains de l'entre-deux-guerres. À la croisée des cultures juive, française et slave, cette romancière ne cesse de surprendre par sa modernité. Comme la plupart de ses romans, «Les Chiens et les Loups» (1940) n'est pas étranger à son histoire personnelle. La douleur de l'exil (issue de la haute bourgeoisie, Irène Némirovsky fuit Kiev et la révolution d'Octobre avec sa famille avant de trouver refuge en France), le poids de la société et la fatalité du destin sont au centre de ce roman qui évoque l'amour insensé de deux jeunes gens, Ada, une artiste révoltée, et Harry, un riche banquier, les deux facettes d'une même personne. Tragiquement attirés l'un vers l'autre, rien ne peut les réunir, si ce n'est le sentiment de leur propre perte. Empreint de mélancolie, «Les Chiens et les Loups» est un texte bouleversant sur l'enfance et l'innocence perdues, un chef-d'ouvre de la littérature, à découvrir ou à redécouvrir.

Irène Némirovsky brosse le portrait sans concession d'une jeune fille qui tente d'échapper à l'emprise de sa mère une grande bourgeoise mariée à un «Juif obscur», pour laquelle elle n'éprouve que de la haine. Récit d'une douloureuse libération, ce roman subversif confirme, s'il en était besoin, le talent d'un des plus grands écrivains du XXe siècle.
