Sacred buildings are among the oldest types of edifice produced in human civilisation. The construction of churches, synagogues, mosques and other building which are used for sacred, ritual or ceremonial acts is still considered the most prestigious of construction tasks. Next to functional demands, which are heavily ritualized in liturgical practice, the architects must concentrate particularly on the aesthetic expression. The space must operate as a framework for belief, with specific reference to the religion to be served. It must also be an appropriate stage for the experience of the divine service and concomitant spirituality. This volume shows exceptional examples of buildings from the various religions and denominations which often attain the status of works of art.

The book presents outstanding hand drawings of German architects from various areas of architecture and design. The focus of the presentation is on the individual manuscripts of the architects and designers. For some time now, many architects and designer are returning to manually drawn depictions of their designs despite the fact that the latest computer-aided visualization techniques allow the creation of almost perfect illusions of planned build-ings. However, they often lack in conveying life and atmosphere to the building resulting in a feeling of coldness and distance from the observer. Beyond the pure conveying of information through a mechanical drawing, the various techniques of manual drawing can convey individual sentiments and impressions. The result is a larger degree of authenticity coupled with an emphasis of the human dimen-sion of architecture.

Cute little bears in all different colours, grinning elephants and cuddly mice cavorting on the padding on the changing table, the winter parka, the playhouse: the design quality of products for children frequently leaves much to be desired. But fortunately the examples are increasing of child appropriate design with style. This is of course not simply a matter of satisfying the aesthetic demands of the adults: It is more about an attractive product design which makes sense for children and their development. This volume presents products for children which allow children to be children. Such products must of course also be functional and stable. But it is at least as important that they playfully incite their phantasy and creativity while encouraging their capabilities and potentials. They should also be a source of pleasure for the potential design lovers of tomorrow. The products presented include toys, baby carriages, furniture, clothing, shoes and much more in the categories of living, fashion and playtime.

From the 1930s, Olivetti, the manufacturer of business products, was widely regarded as the pioneer of corporate architecture. During the 1990s, the concept became firmly established as a basic component of a corporate identity. Architecture and design are used to control the interior and exterior image of company headquarters and office buildings, to production sites and store interiors. Corporate architecture includes both individual projects ranging from high rises to trade fair booths, as well as company-wide design schemes such as that of the Apple stores around the world. The vitalizing and expressive power of architecture as a business card made of stone intends to reflect the self-image of a company and a brand s identity with the aim of expressing the corporate philosophy through architectural symbolism and constructional cultural qualities. Representing very different approaches, the examples from around the world gathered in this book present the whole scope of this extensive topic.

Individual life scripts are most clearly reflected in a persons home. The home s envelope and the arrangements within it represent its inhabitants character and identity; sometimes each component on its own, sometimes as a complementary or contradictory combination, and sometimes as a synthesis of both. The focus can be on the spaces created by the walls, the ceilings, the floors, to the distribution and partition of rooms, to the furnishings and details like sorting the spines of the books on the shelves by color. This volume presents single-family houses, apartments, villas, chalets, townhouses and lofts for singles or couples, for small or big families, or other forms of cohabitation. Featuring more than 100 projects, the most different kind of habitats from around the world are displayed. It shows that indeed every home and every living style is very special and unique.
