   Philippe Starck is one of the world's most prolific and famous designers. Well known for his luxurious hotels and restaurants, he is equally celebrated for his inspirational reworkings of everyday household items. Whether it be his iconic lemon squeezer, dubbed the 'Juicy Salif', or his colourful stylized toothbrushes, Stark's works are some of the earliest examples of 'democratic design'.    With over 1,000 colourful images, Robert Opie brings to life the 1920s and captures the mood of this radical decade in Great Britain. The Twenties were a time for change and invention. The arrival of the wireless provided a new form of entertainment and The Radio Times was launched in 1923. The popularity of the cinema continued and was changed forever with the coming of 'talkies' and The Jazz Singer in 1926. While there were many notable events, from the Tutankhaman discoveries to the Empire exhibition at Wembley, unemployment and workers' discontent pervaded everyday life, culminating in the General Strike of 1926. For children, however, fun and amusement could be found with new cartoon characters: the antics of Felix the Cat at the pictures, tales of Pooh Bear in A.A. Milne's book Winnie-the-Pooh and, in newspapers, Bonzo the Dog ( Daily Sketch ), Rupert the Bear ( Daily Express ), Teddy Tail ( Daily Mail ) and Pip, Squeak and Wilfred ( Daily Mirror ). Apart from women daring to smoke (especially Turkish cigarettes), the young flappers found freedom in the rising hemlines that revealed their legs and enabled the new energetic dances such as the Charleston and Black Bottom. It was an experimental age for hairstyles, perming, crimping, bobbing. No wonder that this decade became known as the 'Roaring Twenties'.

   Frames fulfil a variety of functions, from the protective to the decorative; they can indicate ownership or they can assert the importance of the paintings they enclose. In their shape and ornamentation, frames are linked to architectural forms or to furniture and interior design, while many styles of decoration can be related to the work of goldsmiths and of sculptors. Few pictures survive in their original frames because of changing ownership: they were re-framed so as to harmonise with different settings, whether in princely galleries or private houses. The way that a picture is framed strongly affects its visual appearance and impact. When a painting retains its original frame, we can appreciate the visual relationship between the two that the artist would have intended. Framings by subsequent owners with different frame styles can tell us much about the taste and priorities of a particular period or place. This book looks at frame history and design in the context of the Ashmolean Museum's collection of frames, and aims to provide a sense of the importance of the picture frame in the history of art as a whole.

   Interiors '70 presents a selection of exceptional Italian interiors photographed by Carla De Benedetti between 1965 and 1975. This was particularly rich period of creativity in the field of interior design and its protagonists included Joe Colombo, Carla Venosta, Renzo Mongiardino, Alberto Seassaro, Giorgio Pes, Nanda Vigo, and Gae Aulenti. Spaces styled by these masters characterise a transitional period in the evolution of Italian decor that is not easily categorised. However, De Benedetti's strikingly eloquent photographs, made for architectural and interior design magazines of the time, offer an extraordinary commentary on these influential interiors.The dramatically composed images communicate the style of each space with astuteness and an instinct for the designer's intentions. The decor of the residences shown, located principally in Milan, is characterised by a bold use of colour and intriguing geometries, styles that are now beginning to re-emerge in the world of fashionable magazines. These interiors now exist only in De Benedetti's photographs which have been restored for this book and are more luminous and crisp than when they were originally published more than thirty years ago.    In effect, this book, which features numerous pictures, has remained an essential work of reference for the study of Spanish jewellery during the reign of the Hapsburg and Bourbon Dynasties, extending as far as the rule of Charles IV.    Tunisian — born designer Tom Dixon's career took off in the 1980s when, as an ex-musician and a self-taught welder, he began working for Italian design giant Cappelini. His iconic 'S' chair design produced for Cappelini, and, later, his 'Jack light' created for his own company, Eurolounge, made him an iconic househood name. Dixon's creative process is unusual in that his ideas originate from the tools and materials he has selected, rather than vice versa, creating unique contemporary objects. In 1998, Dixon was appointed Head of Design by household furnishing retailer Habitat, later becoming Creative Director until 2009.    Ettore Sottsass was an Italian architect and designer. His work included furniture, jewellery, glass, lighting and office machine design. His work was unique, much of it influenced by a desire to avoid corporate work, believing that to confine himself to the realms of mass-produced consumerist products would stifle his creativity.    Pier Giacomo Castiglioni (1913-1968) and Achille (1918-2002) are the eldest and the youngest of the three Castiglioni brothers who all studied architecture at the Milan Polytechnic. The two Castiglioni brothers were interested in both technology and art and in the 1940s began their original professional partnership, «Castiglioni brothers». The company was especially successful with their lamps for Arredoluce, Flos, and Artemide.    Alessandro Mendini, born in Milan in 1931, is a major theorist and a driving force behind avant-garde design in Italy. Aside from his artistic career, he was also editor of the architecture magazines Casabella and Modo and publisher of the famous 'Domus' magazine. Considered to be one of the most important contemporary designers in Europe, Mendini's work places an emphasis on cultural diversity and radical expression. He has also produced many collective projects, such as the museum in Groningen, Netherlands, built with Philippe Starck, Frank Stella, and Michele de Lucchi.
