The range spans 'Keep Britain Tidy' campaigns, lavishly produced Benson and Hedges billboards, punk rock posters, hand-printed indictments of Margaret Thatcher and public art projects on the Underground. From conflicts over the content and control of public space to posters blu-tacked to our bedroom walls, Catherine Flood examines how the poster in Britain has adapted itself to a changing technological environment and defied predictions of its demise.

Draping is an art without rules as such, but to master it, you must understand the relationship of fabric to the body. It allows for freedom of garment design, and the opportunity to create customised clothing. Understanding grainlines and the effect they have, on not only the drape of the fabric and seams when being stitched, but also the stretch and therefore fit of a garment, is essential. Then you need to understand the complicated task of how to transfer your draping into pattern form. Once removed from the stand, you will need to know how to put the garment back together, and how to make adjustments to the pattern that won't alter your idea, but will work when you actually stitch it up. This book contains key chapters on understanding fabrics, grainlines and bias cutting, translating designs into patterns, making adjustments, constructing the lining, and finishing with zips, buttons, buttonholes etc. Draping is about problem solving and how to solve all of the problems is usually brings up!

With the motto 'Export or Die!', the magazine was renowned for its innovative design and adventurous editorial approach in promoting British manufacturing in the post-war period. This book takes a detailed look at the background and impact of The Ambassador. The magazine was driven by the vision of its founder Hans Juda and his wife, Elsbeth, who was responsible for much of the magazine's striking photography. Focusing on the perceived strengths of British industry, they set up ambitious photo shoots to showcase the latest couture fashions by the likes of Charles Creed and Victor Stiebel. The magazine promoted fine art as an inspiration for design, and commissioned artists such as John Piper and Henry Moore for their covers.

Modernism Designing a New World: 1914-1939 Modernism Designing a New World: 1914-1939
Автор: Жанр: A&C Black Издательство: A&C Black Год: 2008 Страниц: 448 Дата загрузки: 20 декабря 2010
Modernism: Designing a New World is the first book to explore Modernism in the designed world from a truly international perspective, and across all the arts. It offers a reassessment of the idea of Modernism and reveals the fundamental ways in which it has shaped our own world and its visual culture. Modernism flourished during the years 1914 to 1939. As a movement it was the key point of reference for 20th century architecture, design and art. Modernists had a Utopian desire to create a better world, frequently combined with social and political beliefs that design and art could transform society. The range of objects illustrated — including painting, sculpture, film, photography, prints and collage as well as architecture, interiors, furniture, manufactured products, graphic and fashion design — reflect the period's emphasis on the unity of the arts and the key role of the fine arts in shaping contemporary visual culture.Europe and America take centre stage but the reach of Modernism is demonstrated by selected works from around the world, including Russia, Palestine and Japan.

Bringing together practitioners, theorists and critics, this groundbreaking book assesses the impact of the phenomenon on all areas of art and design. It covers architecture, interiors and urban planning; product, graphic and furniture design; the fashion and style industries; and photography, film, television and video — everything from MTV and Grace Jones, to White Noise and Bladerunner, Thierry Mugler and Commes des Garcons.

Fear and Fashion in the Cold War Fear and Fashion in the Cold War
Автор: Жанр: A&C Black Издательство: A&C Black Год: 2008 Страниц: 128 Дата загрузки: 21 августа 2010
This book explores Cold War fashion in all its aspects, ranging from innovations in materials to the cybernetic visions of the 1960s, from the bikini to the spacesuit, vinyl radiation suits to high-tech jewellery, Paco Rabanne to Barbarella. Set in the context of art, film, science and design, Pavitt explores how the image of the body was shaped by Cold War concerns — atomic anxieties, the space race, technological developments and the first forays into 'hyper-reality.' With a stunning selection of images alongside military, political and scientific research, the book shows how counter-cultural theories and experiences in the later 1960s shaped an alternative view of the 'Cold War Body'.
