Hokusai: Greeting Cards Hokusai: Greeting Cards
Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) was initially trained to engrave and cut woodblock prints, but at the age of 18 also learned to design actor prints from the ukiyo-e master Katsukawa Shunsho (1726-92). Hokusai had an enormous output of about 30,000 original prints, paintings, sketches and book illustrations on a variety of subjects. Perhaps best-known for his beautiful landscapes, Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, produced at the age of 75, proved to be a major influence on European art and are today recognized throughout the world. A follow up to the best-selling publication Hokusai by Gian Carlo Calza, this fine selection of cards includes masterpieces from throughout Hokusai's long career. The prints featured here reflect the great themes of Hokusai's age — theatre, nature, landscape and feminine beauty. These wonderfully varied images illustrate all aspects of Hokusai's home, the ancient city of Edo (now Tokyo), from pictures promoting kabuki actors and beautiful courtesans to dreamy views of ancient bridges. This elegantly packaged collection will make an original and delightful gift at any time of year.

Earthsong Postcards Earthsong Postcards
These bold new postcards capture the stunning beauty of the unspoiled areas of our planet. The fifty cards feature a selection of pictures taken from Bernhard Edmaier's bestselling book Earthsong. The images chosen reflect the four major environments that cover the earth's surface — Aqua (water), Arid (desert), Green (forest and grassland) and Barren (tundra). In these cards Edmaier presents us with the frozen ice of the arctic next to barren deserts; the lush green forests and rivers of Europe beside South American volcanic lakes and the sapphire seas of the Bahamas against the salt lakes of California. Edmaier's photographs show locations around the world and demonstrate that there are still corners of the earth untouched by human influence, where nature rules and natural phenomena such as volcanoes, glaciers, desert sand dunes and rivers dominate and define the landscape. Photographed from the air, vast natural patterns of the earth are revealed to us in their unique beauty, showing phenomena that may last for only a few brief moments or remain for millions of years to come.

Early Christian and Byzantine Art Early Christian and Byzantine Art

In the 1320's AD the Emperor Constantine moved the capital of his Empire from Rome to Byzantium, which was renamed Conatantinople, and until its fall in 1453 remained a major artistic centre. Under successive emperors and empresses for more than a thousand years, artists, archtects and craftsmen produced superb and intriguing works ranging fom the grandest public buildings to the smallest and most personal items. Today this art is generally termed early Christian and Byzantine. Working from the surviving material this work explains how and why early Christian and Byzantine art was made and used. The reader is taken on a journey of discovery as the ideas this art sought to express are considered.

Claude Debussy Claude Debussy
Claude Debussy (1862-1918) was a great harmonic innovator and one of the most original musical voices of the twentieth century. He created fresh, new tonal perspectives without abandoning tonality itself. With a revolutionary sense of instrumental colour and a fleeting, atmospheric sound world, he is often described, rightly or wrongly, as an 'Impressionist' composer. This book presents a clear narrative history of Debussy's life, work and cultural context along with essential reference material and striking illustrations, making it a vital purchase for anyone interested in the composer.

Dogs Dogs
This volume presents amateur, anonymous snapshots of dogs from the turn of the century to the early 1950s in all kinds of ordinary and extraordinary settings. In it, we see dogs under the Christmas table, on front porches, at play by the beach, and posed beside babies, birthday girls, and in the casual family portrait. Each photograph in this remarkable collection reflects a unique moment in time and the sometimes surprising, occasionally humorous, and always intimate relationships people have with their dogs. Catherine Johnson's collection — with its small format, unpretentious subjects, and days-gone-by aesthetic — not only reveals a love for 'man's best friend', but also presents a sophisticated selection made with a keen eye for the unusual within mundane.

Any Objections? Any Objections?
A collection of bold, fun, colourful images giving an insight into the life of Mario Testino, one of today's top fashion photographer. Over the past few years the name of Mario Testino has become synonymous with the cutting edge of fashion photography. His redefining images of Diana, Princess of Wales, and Madonna, as well as numerous campaigns for Gucci, Versace, Missoni and others, have established him as an arbiter of Nineties style. Born in Lima, Peru, he moved to London in his twenties and set about becoming a photographer. His tremendous energy and love of life carried him through the tough journey that finally earned him innumerable pages in Vogue and an address book that is positively bursting at the seams. Any Objections? is Testino's first book. Provocative and sometimes shocking, it is a lightning roller-coaster of unpublished images which brilliantly illuminates the vision of one of photography's shrewdest eyes. Fashion and the gutter, nature and artifice, high life and low, jostle for his attention. Faces of the very famous in the least expected places, bodies of the very beautiful, landscapes and cities, close friends and extraordinary passersby all find their place in a pattern which is held together by Testino's evident sense of the absurd. The book is an insight into the raw material of fashion, where a glimpse of life from a street in Tangier can be the inspiration for a fashion story in New York. At once diary and commentary, picture after picture (all reproduced full-page) provoke reactions as diverse as their subject-matter: from shock to amusement and from surprise to delight. Whether or not you have any objections, you can't help being intrigued by Testino's very personal view of the world that surrounds him.

This new abridged edition of the highly acclaimed Self Life Death provides an overview of Nobuyoshi Araki's (b.1940) prolific forty year career, featuring his finest and most iconic images in a new, expanded format. Arguably Japan's greatest living photographer — and certainly its most controversial — Araki consistently challenges artistic and social conventions in postwar Japan. The book examines Araki's work from a wide variety of viewpoints: Japanese and European; female and male, including all his major works, such as Sentimental Journey (1971), Tokyo Story (1989) and Erotos (1993). Araki's writings, widely admired and published in Japan, which were translated into English for the first time for Self Life Death, are also included. At this affordable and accessible format, a new audience of photography students and enthusiasts will be able to own a book on this influential photographer.
